RE: anthrocon 2007
< fiction >
>> Here's my very general report of AC:

I got a bad case of jetlag, so I slept most of the first day while PearBear did most of the nitty-gritty. He's also an awesome driver, despite having to mirror everything right to left in the rental car.

Later I helped him set up the table we were sharing. We borrowed the idea from Pyurio's artwork and put thematic designs on it. His side was apple-pie goodness with tasteful toys and knick-knacks, and his colours red brown black. My side had odd things hanging on a small panel or arranged on my side of the table (an egg painted red, a banana with a man coming out of it, etc.) and had an ocean theme. Between our "spaces" was a strip of woven ochre songket with gold thread, where we put some art of both our characters (exclusive stuff we don't post online).

I only managed to sell about 1/3 of my prints (not that I had that many with me) most of them from my non-porno catalogue, but I'm happy with the attention (I didn't think anybody'd pick up my nekkid dudes at all). Thanked whoever said good things about my work as they flipped through my catalogue. Everybody was clamouring like Energizer bunnies for PearBear's stuff, though. He didn't intend to make prints, but I poked him about it before we arrived, and they were snapped up real quick. I joked that his right arm looked bigger from all the signing. I told ya you'd make a bundle from those, baby. ^_^

PB asked if I wanted to see the rest of AC, and he'll watch the booth. I was too tired to go around the rest of the place, so I told him to go instead. Made him promise to take lots of pictures. I got a kiss on the cheek (something we'd never do in public back home ^_^ ) and PearBear told me he'll bring back the gossip.

My stationary status was true for all the days in AC. Mostly it was my gout acting up and making my legs hurt and walking in crowds impossible (must've been that cheeseburger we had for lunch too, damn rich American food). Couldn't move around much, so I have no idea what half the dudes reporting AC are talking about.

I would've loved to walk around and spook some friends or something. XD

The table next to mine had leather-bound doggies pictures, and the other side had drawings of ultrabuff everythings. I just sat a bit behind and did some sketches right there, when nobody was visiting.

Ryuumajin and Pyurio happened to pass my booth, though, which was wonderful. In exchange for some awesome sketches, I gave them a signed print of their favourite pieces. Ryuumajin also gave me a blue ninja-doll he got from a shop in Bandung (which was so strange I loved it). Bandung ninja lol. Few others were quite so nice, though, mostly just curious passers-by who were probably saving the money for better artists.

Hm? What we did at the hotel? That's none of your business. Tongue

RE: anthrocon 2007
Yes, I actually did. I need to upload the photos I took, although I really didn't take much of the actual con events itself, and some of them are horribly blurry. I should have brought a card reader/data cable.

Check the AC 07 webpage, made the first Singaporean count of 1. It was really fun even though I just soak up the atmosphere and was overwhelmed most of the time. I hope to be there again next year and maybe some other US cons as well. Its hideously expensive, but well worth it, treat it as the ultimate furry pilgrimage. Go for it someday! Winking

There was even a pair of protesters in afros outside the con on Thursday, but they turned the tables on them quickly and were left out soaking in the rain haha.

*Twitches*

Now that you've mentioned it... Anthrocon... The ultimate furry pilgrimage! I think you might've set off an alarm in everybody's heads, cause it's seriously tempting to me now. Tongue

How much did it cost to make a trip there for you, DL? I'm guessing maybe US$3,000-4,000?

It's towards the low end of USD$3K-4K, because of the weaker USD over the years. To be honest, I had been saving up to go AC since 2005, but was delayed for various reasons. Its my first overseas holiday for a while too, so I wasn't too thrifty about it either. There are a few more ways to cut down in my opinion.

The bulk of the cost is undeniably going to be the tickets. NWA and United airlines seem to be offer the cheapest tickets to get there (in a reasonable amount of time too), but I'm sure there might be even more budget tickets. Check the ticket prices often because they can go up and down quite a bit (I got mine when it was going up, I've seen as low as SGD$1,499). Be prepared for a very long flight (about 20-24 hours) though, and clearing security can take some time.

The next bulk is the hotel room. USD$110 + tax per night at the Westin is pretty expensive, but you can share out the room and cut that cost down. I think each room can support up to 4 roomies, there's a king size bed for 2 and you can get a smaller bed from the hotel staff. The Omni is just slightly cheaper at USD$105, but you need to walk a short distance to get to the Westin, and another bit to get to the David Lawrence Convention Center Hall C, where the Artist Alley/Dealers Room is. The Omni does look grander than Westin though.

Do get in touch with some people you know who are going to the con too. They can help break the ice tremendously and introduce to people that they already know. It also helps to figure out the layout of the place and some of the smaller non-official events to visit.

Haha, heard of that bit on Funday Pawpets episode 339, with pictures of them standing there under the rain protesting against furries. What got me amused is that Uncle Kagi went over and shield them (the protestors) with umbrella that has the AnthroCon logo printed on them. The protestors are protected by AnthroCon *snrks*

Sure wish i could save up to head for AC to experience the event there. Seems exciting. :3
